Before worrying about how to wash polyester, it is important to understand the fabric itself. It is a synthetic material made from petroleum-based fibres. Its unique properties make it resistant to shrinking and stretching, but improper washing can lead to piling, fading, or losing its softness over time.
Key Features of Polyester:
- Wrinkle-resistant and quick-drying
- Resistant to most stains but susceptible to oil-based stains
- Holds its shape well, even after multiple washes
While polyester is relatively easy to care for, following the right steps is crucial to maintain its durability.
Pre-treatment for Stains
If you’re dealing with stains on your polyester clothes, pre-treatment is the first step before washing. This is particularly important for oil-based stains, which can be harder to remove. Here’s how to wash polyester:
- Apply Stain Remover: Use a small amount of stain remover or apply 2ml of Vanish Crystal White directly to the affected area.
- Rub Gently: Rub the solution into the stain using a soft-bristled brush or your fingers. Avoid using too much force to prevent damage to the fibres.
- Wash Immediately: Once the stain has been treated, wash the garment promptly to prevent it from setting.
Tip: Always test a small, inconspicuous area before applying any cleaning product to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric.
Soaking for Deep Cleaning
For polyester garments that are heavily soiled or have absorbed sweat and dirt, soaking is an effective way to refresh them.
- Prepare the Soak: Fill a tub or bucket with 5 litres of warm water and add 100ml of Vanish Crystal White liquid.
- Soak Coloured Clothes: Let coloured garments soak for up to 1 hour.
- Soak White Clothes: For white polyester garments, soak them for up to 6 hours to restore brightness and remove stains.
- Rinse Thoroughly: After soaking, rinse the clothes to remove residue before washing them in the machine.
